Apple services issue temporarily prevented MobiControl from deploying iOS App Store applications to all iOS devices

Issue

Due to changes made by Apple on Nov 15, 2018, SOTI MobiControl temporarily could not deploy public App Store apps to any iOS device.  This affected the installation of App Store apps with and without Volume Purchase Program (VPP) licensing. Apple made changes on Nov 26, 2018, which resolved the issue.

Affects

  • All versions of iOS
  • All versions of MobiControl

Cause

When SOTI MobiControl requests an iOS device to install an App Store application, it identifies the application using its Bundle Identifier.  When SOTI MobiControl requests an iOS device to install a B2B application, it identifies the application using its iTunes Store Identifier.   When SOTI MobiControl requests an iOS device to install an enterprise application, it identifies the application using its Manifest URL.  All three are valid identifiers as per Apple's MDM documentation

Starting on Nov 15, 2018, iOS devices began rejecting app installation requests that identified the application using its Bundle Identifier, but continued to accept those requests that identified the application using its iTunes Store Identifier and the Manifest URL.

Therefore, until this issue is resolved, SOTI MobiControl cannot deploy the following types of applications to all iOS devices:

  1. Public App Store Apps using VPP licensing.
  2. Public App Store Apps without VPP licensing.

It is important to note that that this does not affect the deployment of B2B or enterprise applications.

Resolution

This issue has been resolved by Apple as of November 26, 2018. Normal operations of iOS devices using SOTI MobiControl have resumed. We appreciate your patience as SOTI and Apple worked together to bring this issue to resolution.
