Android Enterprise - Screen Orientation Lock

Android Enterprise - Screen Orientation Lock

Hi!

We have started developing on the Android Enterprise platform instead of Android+ but one quite big problem is that we can't lock the screen orientation. In Android+ we used the writesecuresettings command for this but naturally this can't be used in AE.

Since we don't want any manual steps in the staging process of quite a lot devices we would like to find a way to automatically apply a locked setting in portrait mode.

Anyone have a solution for this or have the same problem?

Hi Johan,

Can you please share the make and model of the device including the version of Android being used?

Thanks

Hi

Right now we are using this on the Zebra TC56 running Android 6 or 7 but we might use this on other brands as well. I have raised this question in a case to your Enterprise Support team as well and they are looking into it.

Since the orientation lock setting was not included in the MX framework and the whole point of using Android Enterprise is that you should not be dependent on a certain type of brand, just make sure you have the correct Android version running on the device. It seems like a natural way of changing this setting globally from MobiControl.

Out of curiosity, what led to the decision to switch from Android+ (DA) to Android Enterprise (DO)? I understand that the writing is on the wall and that we will all eventually be forced in that direction, but my general opinion is that I can still accomplish everything I need to do with Android+ on a Zebra device while there are inherent limitations with Android Enterprise.

Matt, I totally agree with you.  Android Plus and Android Enterprise supports different sets of features, and each has its pros and cons compared to the other platform.   If a particular device brand/model  can run on both platforms,  one has to weigh what supported features are most critical in one's use-case  to determine which platform to choose.

This principle actually applies to  Android+ platform  when my customers choose what Android+ device models to buy.  As different brand/model supports different set of Android+ features,  choosing the model that supports the most critical features required for the use case is more important than just comparing prices, firmware versions, RAM sizes and other hardware resources based on paper quotations and specifications.   Many OEM device manufacturers just don't bother to implement some features in their firmware to work with the full Android+ API's.  Complaining to Soti won't help.  Google also only define minimum set of features for Android Enterprise devices, and some OEM device manufacturers just don't bother to implement extra functionalities in plug-in. Soti also can't help in these cases.

Actually, if the Zebra device in question is running in kiosk mode in Android Enterprise and "Settings" is to be blocked, then I believe locking screen orientation should be possible with another script command "lockdownorientation" . (though I must admit I have no Zebra devices to check things out).

StageNow or EMDK settings + mxconfig script could be an option.

If you take some early configuration steps when devices are deployed, you can use adb to meet your goals too, you will need to activate USB debug from mobicontrol first though. I found what works best for that is to push a specific profile as self service, and install it before usb debug usage.
