Enable Web Filtering / Whitelist

Is the Web Filtering / Whitelist feature only available when using the Webroot SecureWeb Browser application and only if it's a managed application (installed via the Play Store)?

I've followed these instructions but when it comes to adding the actual web filter, I can't find it!

They say:

To enable the Android Web Filter, right click a group or a single Android device, click Device Configuration. After the Device Configuration dialog appears, click Web Filter

But I do not get this option:

No Device Config

Doing some more reading, I found mention of an Android For Work Web Filter, but having followed those instructions, I still don't have the option available:

No Web Filter

Hi Chris,

Webroot SecureWeb is also needed by SOTI MobiControl for filtering web content.  However this being said "Effective September 1, 2018 Soti will end support for the Webroot SecureWeb browser, and all customer that require web filtering capabilities will need to transition to the Soti Surf browser and upgrade to a version of SOTI MobiControl 13.2 or Higher."

To answer your question whitelisting should only allow whitelisted sites, blacklisting should prevent sites that have been blacklisted and allow all other sites.

The best way to go about blacklist / whitelisting websites in my opinion is using Soti Surf anyways.  Soti Surf can be installed from the Playstore/App store and it's configuration settings deployed as part of a profile for Android, Android + and Apple OS's.  Soti Surf will give you more granular control of the internet on your devices as well as the ability to access internet sites without the need for a VPN, cross-platform support for iOS and Android, and data loss prevention capabilities for corporate web content.  I have included a link for more information on how to use this feature below.  As well as a screenshot of the configuration options.

Hope this helps!

Hello Chris,

Thank you for your inquiry!

You missed a step when looking to configure the web filter.   After you open the profile box to add and configure your profile there is a drop down menu that allows you to select the type of profile you are trying to configure.  This is where you will select Android For Work which will give you slightly different options, including web filter under the restrictions heading.

I will include a screenshot so you can locate it faster.  Take a look at it again and let me know if this helps!

Does the device have to be enrolled as an Android for Work/Android Enterprise managed device in order to take advantage of those configuration options or can they be applied to Android+ devices in Device Administrator mode?

I couldn't see a way of accessing them through a regular Android+ enrollment.

Thanks.

That seems to have opened up access to the web filtering options, but I now don't seem to be able to employ the Lockdown feature.

I have a Kiosk option, but the device never actual seems to enable the lock screen.

Also, I notice that since switching from Android+ to Android for Work, I no longer have the option to 'Block OS updates' under Feature Controls.

Any ideas please?

Have you tried creating separate profiles? One Android for Work with the Web Filters and one Android+ with the other configurations?

Hi Matt,

I've just tried that, and while the lockdown screen now appears, the web filter doesn't seem to have any efftect.

How do I block all web access outside the whitelist?

How do I block all websites using the Web Filter?

I want to stop the users from accessing all but one url, I understand that allowed websites must be set to "allowed", but what url do I enter for the "blocked" websites (i.e. all other sites)?

I've tried "*.*" but this has no effect.
