IMEI number in Alert email
Can you find on your web-console the IMEI number of the device of interest?
Under normal circumstances, any supported macro will be replaced by a null string if the actual value is not readable via the device firmware. So, you should not get the untouched macro expression in your email message.
Have you checked if you mis-spelt the macro with 'l' or '1' in place of 'I'?

Unfortunately it isn't always possible to use the IMEI number in an alert email. As per SOTI's version 13/14 help documentation "MobiControl supports several macros, however not ever macro is available for every situation or for every device type. The supported macros will be displayed in the macros drop down list beside the relevant field."

One possible work around for this would be to name your devices using the IMEI number and then for the alert you can select the %source% which will display the device name however that may require renaming your devices.
What exactly is the use case for using the IMEI number? Are you just trying to identify which device has triggered the alert?
