Setting static IPs from SOTI settings app on Android

We send android mobile devices out to users for deployment in their facilities.  The devices are locked down to limit the user to only selected applications including the SOTI Settings app for managing their connections to WiFi.

We have a user site that requires the device to use a static IP address and do not do assignment of static IPs by MAC address from their DHCP server, but have the network IP config set manually for any devices that connect to their network.

I am not able to find any way in the SOTI settings app to allow the user to manually set network info like IP address, is there a path for this that I am missing?

As far as I know, your required feature is currently not supported in Soti Settings Manager.   The usual workaround is to use Application-Run-Control related policies to allow direct access of particular page/tab of the device's Settings, but the success of using this approach without compromising security depends heavily on the particular UI design within the "Settings" app of the device, and thus varies widely with device brands/models.

Hi Troy Roberts,

Thanks for posting on SOTI Pulse, Thanks Raymond for responding to the post.

I want to let you know that currently, MobiControl and its SOTI setting manager application don't have a feature that allows you to set static IP addresses for Android devices directly. The typical way to achieve this involves using different strategies like device-level rules, special instructions in the form of scripts, or other methods. It really depends on the situation and the kind of device you're working with.

For some situations, you might need to think about different approaches. For instance, one approach could be setting up devices using DHCP first (which automatically assigns IP addresses) and then afterward configuring them to use static IP addresses.

MDM usually doesn’t have this kind of granular network configuration control over an Android device.

As SOTI MobiControl is primarily focused on device management, application control, and network settings, but this kind of granular network configuration control might fall under the jurisdiction of the underlying device management framework.

For example, there are some Android devices, especially those rugged devices primarily designed for work-related use cases,  that have customized firmware/utility apps that allow such configuration.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're dedicated to providing assistance and support.

Kind regards,
