Setting up multiple different WiFis on Android devices before in field use

Hello everybody,

I have been trying to find a good way for setting up multiple WiFis on my Lenovo tabM7 devices running Android 9.

We have around 90 Stores, each store is using its own WiFi (different SSID, different key etc.). I obviously have to put in the WiFi information on each device before it gets send out to the store during the initial enrollment and setup of the device in our main office. Each store has its different device group inside MobiControl.

It can't really be best practice to use 90+ Profiles with different WiFi settings and assign them to each device?

Thanks!

If not profile then you may use Mobicontrol Stage Barcode generator to create 90 QR codes with different WIFI settings which could be easy to generate. And then use QR reader on device to setup.

The approach to be taken actually depneds on whether your device also has cellular connection or are just Wifi-only devices.

If you already have 90 device group, deploying the Wifi setting via a separate profile may not be totally a bad idea.  Not only can you clone profiles from a template profile to reduce your workload, you can also easily change and deploy new settings (e.g. password, mode, etc)  remotely at any time with minimal extra effort.   This is quire imporant for some companies which tend to change the SSID/password at reqular interval for security reasons.

With the right programming skill and knowledge in MobiControl, it is possible to use MobiControl REST API to change the Wifi settings.

Thanks for your answers!

I've been thinking about using QR codes created with MobiControl Stage. That would propably be the easiest way. I usually know in which store the device will get send out to so providing the device with the WiFi settings via QR code during the inital enrollment and set up of the device agent would propably work out for me.

Thanks Raymond for letting me know about a different approach. The devices are using Wifi only and I was just speaking with some of my colleagues and there won't be any changes made to SSID/password.

I might go ahead and get a bit more familiar with using the MobiControl REST API.
